AlfaSent uses AI to recognize emotions in texts

AlfaSent, a spin-off from Ghent University, led by linguist Ellen De Geyndt, is developing innovative software that helps companies analyze feedback and customer reviews. Using artificial intelligence, AlfaSent provides in-depth insights into customer sentiment and emotions. This pioneering work in language technology highlights the potential of the Department of Arts and Philosophy, which is increasingly committed to digitalization and technological applications.

From passion to spin-off

Ellen De Geyndt, a UGent alumna in applied linguistics, combined her passion for language and technology. After a postgraduate degree in Computer Assisted Language Mediation, she learned to program and understand the power of AI in language applications. She worked as a language engineer, but found her calling in a UGent research project focused on language technology. This research led to the creation of AlfaSent, a company that is now a leader in the analysis of emotion and sentiment in texts.

What does AlfaSent do?

AlfaSent uses AI to efficiently analyze business feedback, such as hotel reviews. Their software not only detects positive or negative sentiments, but can also understand nuances. For example, a review may indicate that a breakfast is not simply "good," but "exceptionally good," an insight that provides companies with valuable strategic information.

What are the benefits?

  • Advanced sentiment analysis: the software distinguishes subtle emotions and nuances in texts.
  • Time savings: companies get a visual overview of feedback through an intuitive dashboard.
  • Self-learning system: AlphaSent continues to improve by learning patterns from new contexts.

Future prospects

In the coming years, the company hopes to become a leading player in emotion and sentiment analysis, contributing to the further development of language technology from Flanders.

Combining research and technology, AlfaSent shows how innovations in language technology can support businesses and further digitize society.
