Ghent University has taken a remarkable step in innovation and sustainability by planting Flanders' first spin-off birth forest. This symbolic initiative celebrates the university’s recent spin-offs and highlights their crucial role in transforming groundbreaking research into societal and economic impact. The event was organised by UGent TechTransfer Office and took place at Tech Lane Ghent Science Park, Campus Ardoyen.

The afternoon began with an information fair where entrepreneurial researchers and emerging spin-offs had the opportunity to connect with support organizations such as VLAIO, VOKA, UNIZO, and IMEC iStart. This networking event provided a valuable chance for young businesses and innovative researchers to engage with key players in Flanders’ innovation ecosystem.
At 4 PM, the highlight of the event took place: the planting of the first-ever spin-off birth forest. Founders of UGent spin-offs from 2022, 2023, and 2024 were invited to plant their own tree—a symbolic gesture representing both growth and innovation. To commemorate this milestone, a sustainable bamboo plaque was unveiled.

Rector Rik Van de Walle emphasized the significance of spin-offs for both the university and society: “Spin-offs translate top-tier research into market-ready applications. Moreover, they help our science parks evolve into globally leading ecosystems for deep-tech innovation.” Bio Inx CEO Jasper Van Hoorick also stressed in his speech the importance of fostering a strong entrepreneurial climate within the academic world.
The celebratory afternoon concluded with a networking reception, where researchers, entrepreneurs, and policymakers exchanged insights and experiences. With this initiative — a first in Flanders — Ghent University once again demonstrates its commitment to innovation, entrepreneurship, and sustainability.
